I have been reading The Edible Woman by Margaret Atwood. She wrote it in 1965 which does not seem that long ago but the women wear gloves to match their handbags, they are expected to quit work if they marry, only the men smoke and they SMOKE, as a fiancee Marian finds herself becoming 'seen and not heard' around her husbands friends, like an ornament.
"Marian found herself envious of Clara for the first time in three years. Whatever was going to happen to Clara had already happened: she had turned into what she was going to be. It wasn't that she wanted to change places with Clara; she only wanted to know what she was becoming, what direction she was taking, so she could be prepared. It was waking up in the morning one day and finding she had already changed without being aware of it that she dreaded." p.193
Or just waking up for the rest of your life the same!
